Ready for a Reading Road Trip, It's Monday, What are You Reading, July 21, 2014

It's Monday! What are you Reading is a meme began by Sheila at Book Journeys as a way to share what you read and/or reviewed the previous week and what is in store for the upcoming week. It's also a great chance to see what others are reading. I first learned about it from Jen at Teach Mentor Texts and Kellee and Ricki of Unleashing Readers and have become a regular linked up blog. Thanks #PLN

Referred to as a meta-fictional picture book, this interactive story features our old cartoon buddies Tom the cat and Jerry the mouse. Jerry is hiding in the book and making quite a mess for poor old Tom. Tom asks the reader for help moving through the pages of the book sometimes quickly to avoid a dog attack and other times slowly to prevent setting off mouse traps.

I have been a fan of Tom and Jerry cartoons for many years so I liked it. I would have liked to have seen more interactions with the reader maybe Jerry was nibbling on some cheese and we have to smell it or Tom gets tangled up and we have to wiggle out. otherwise, it's cute.

Wildebeest, impalas, elephants, giraffes, vultures and other African animals gather around a watering hole in this book of poetry infused with general information about the animals who co-exist, dependent on each other and the watering hole.

Favorite book of the week:

I became a fan of Rainbow Rowell after reading Eleanor and Park and Fangirl was just as wonderful. I can't wait to get my hands on Landline. Rowell has such a fresh and unique writing style and I appreciate the subtle humor sprinkled throughout her books.

This week I am taking a road trip to the Scholastic Reading Summit in Houston with six fellow librarians + one classroom teacher. Several months ago I registered our group and boy am I glad I did because it sold out quickly. I guess everyone heard that the amazing Donalyn Miller was going to be the keynote speaker. The sessions sound terrific and I am hoping to bump into Twitter friends while we are there.

 My current reads:
I have already read The Book Whisperer and this week, I am starting Reading in the Wild.

I also picked up two books today that I have been really wanting to read and
can't wait to sink my reading teeth into them.

Now tell me, what are you reading?

    1. Thanks Alex, now I am wondering what your book committee was discussing. If you Google an image of Grasshopper Jungle, you will see some interesting pics. I think this book will be a shocker.

  6. I love reading poetry to my kids and my older one has developed a real taste for it herself--Dear Wandering Wildebeest is now on my wish list! You've probably seen Song of the Water Boatman and Other Pond Poems, but if you haven't, it's wonderful.

    1. I was not a poetry fan until I began to build up my at the time thin library collection of poetry. I am learning poetry can be many things. Non fiction, humor, and a beautiful flow of words.

  7. I loved both named Rainbow Rowell books, too. I have yet to buy Landline for myself, I keep telling myself I have enough other unfinished books around here that I still need to tackle! But I'm itching to... :) Thanks for sharing.

  8. I just bought Fangirl. Not sure when I'll get to it, but it looks really good! I bought the Testing trilogy and I was hoping to get to it this summer, but I have not been getting through my TBR pile like I thought I would! Amazing how busy summer gets :) Have a great time at the conference!

    1. Kellee, I got your message about difficulty posting comments. Right now I am seeing a light gray exclamation point within a triangle next to your comment. I will try to research and discover what that mystery means.

Are you referring to Reading in the Wild? I am enjoying it so much.It is like a print version of #Titletalk referring to ways we motivate our students to read. I especially enjoyed her chapter on "fake reading" seen it/done it myself. Thanks for the blog shout outs. You are a peach!

  11. There's a Mouse Hiding in This Book sounds like a lot of fun! My students love books in that style like, Do Not Open This Book!

  12. The Reading Summit sounds like so much fun - we should organize something like that here in Singapore. I am fan of Donalyn Miller's PD books - and have devoured her The Book Whisperer and Reading in the Wild last year. I do hope you share bits and pieces from her keynote speech in Texas. Haven't read any of Rainbow Rowell's novels yet, Fangirl seems like a good place to start. :)
