Oh No!
written by Candace Fleming
illustrated by Eric Rohmann

A hungry tiger chases a frog who falls into a deep, deep  hole. "Oh no! he cries out. How will he get out? Many animals try to help him but they too fall in the hole while the cagey tiger lurks nearby waiting to feast on them all. What could possibly happen next?

In trying to decide which monster book to write about today, I thought of my grandson and how he had nightmares after I read Creepy Carrots to him when he was two years old. The great thing is, he still loved the book and asked me to bring it home from my library time and time again. He even hid it in the secret hidey hole where he and his cousin hide their favorite toys. For us, creepy carrots are just as scary as Frankenstein.

Creepy Carrots by Aaron Reynolds
Illustrated by Peter Brown

Jasper Rabbit loves carrots—especially Crackenhopper Field carrots.
He eats them on the way to school.
He eats them going to Little League.
He eats them walking home.
Until the day the carrots start following him…or are they?
It’s all fun and games  . . . until you get too greedy.

This beautifully illustrated informational book about turkeys is written and illustrated by naturalist Jim Arnosky. A turkey narrates the book explaining what life among turkeys is like. Turkeys are always on the look out for critters who think they are tasty and they fly like Boeing 747s.

Kids really enjoy the festive song in this fun book.

Listen to Jim Arnosky sing "I'm a Turkey"

Jim Arnosky creates the most wonderful illustrations.
Here is a turkey from his coloring book.

I like to use I'm a Turkey as part of my Thanksgiving story-times. Happy Turkey day!

I Wanna Iguana

by Karen Kaufman Orloff Illustrated by David Catrow

Alex just has to convince his mom to let him have an iguana, so he puts his arguments in writing. He promises that she won't have to feed it or clean its cage or even see it if she doesn't want to. Of course Mom imagines life with a six-foot-long iguana eating them out of house and home. Alex's reassurances: It takes fifteen years for an iguana to get that big. I'll be married by then and probably living in my own house. and his mom's replies: How are you going to get a girl to marry you when you own a giant reptile? will have kids in hysterics as the negotiations go back and forth through notes. And the lively, imaginative illustrations show their polar opposite dreams of life with an iguana.

Mama's Sari

by Pooja Makhjani

Mama's Sari is one of my favorite books in my library. It celebrates a special stage in mother daughter relationships. Little girls love to dress up and look just like their mothers. This must be true in all cultures.

Mama's Saris is a perfect balance of elegant language and rich illustrations. It is a wonderful mother daughter story.

On her seventh birthday, a young girl watches as her mother sorts through her collection of saris made of elegant fabrics and shimmering colors like a black chiffon that is the color of the night sky. She listens intently as her mother tells how each one has been worn for special occasions such as the day her daughter was born and brought home from the hospital. Granting her birthday wish, her mother lets her select a sari to wear for her birthday celebration. Mama carefully and expertly wraps a beautiful blue sari around her daughter and offers her matching bangles to wear and a bindi on her forehead as a final touch.

Mama's Sari pairs up nicely with this book:

What Can You Do With a Rebozo?

Colorfully illustrated rhyming book a young girl describes the many useful things one can do with a rebozo. It can become a superhero's cape, a baby cradle, and a warm blanket on a cool night.

A rebozo is a traditional shawl worn in Mexico and in Mexican American households.

Books I have read and blogged about this week:
(but none of them were about frogs)
Birds

Balarama

Two Bad Ants
Rocking in my School Shoes

Miss Moore Thought Otherwise
Barnum's Bones

What I am reading and listening to:
I like to read a book and also listen to it a second time in the car or as I am writing my blog posts (like right now).

by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl

This is a very well crafted book trailer that came out long before the movie. I think the creators did an excellent job of providing a glimpse into the story of Beautiful Creatures.

..and of course-the movie trailer. I haven't seen the movie yet. I am one of those book people that must read the book first before seeing the movie.

Awesome new arrivals in my school library!

I will be reading these next week.

So glad to finally have Mr. Wuffles in my school library!

I am looking forward to the holiday season ahead. Such a great time to snuggle in and read my heart out. Happy reading to you all.

Birds by Kevin Henkes

Birds come in all sizes, shapes, and colors. Birds are magic. Birds are everywhere. If you listen very carefully you will hear them, no matter where you live. And if you look very closely you will see them, no matter where you are
