Another day in the Maze, It's Monday, What Are You Reading-July 7, 2014

Monday! What are you Reading is a meme began by Sheila at Book Journeys as a way to share what you read and/or reviewed the previous week and what is in store for the upcoming week. It's also a great chance to see what others are reading. I first learned about it from Jen at Teach Mentor Texts and Kellee and Ricki of Unleashing Readers and have become a regular linked up blog. Thanks #PLN
I just finished the Maze Runner as one of my #Summerthrowdown reads for July and #MustReadin2014. I have been waiting weeks on the library hold list to get my hands on a copy. I found it entertaining and irritating at the same time.

The premise for the story was fantastic. There is a massive stone wall maze that contains an area known as "the glade" which is home to a group of teen age boys whose memories have been wiped before they arrived. Once a month a "greenie"or "greenbean" is sent up via a metal box to join the others. The boys are left to survive using the few supplies they are regularly provided and must live by their wits. Every day a group of Runners go into the maze to seek an escape. After two years the mystery of the maze has yet to be solved when Thomas shows up and then everything changes including the sudden arrival of a girl.

I like the mystery of the story but the characters were blah with the exception of Chuck and Newt. I envisioned Newt as an Aussie accented character and Chuck as the sweet gullible buddy who is bound to be killed off.

The movie trailer certainly makes it look more exciting than the book. I really want to see the movie but the book was only mildly entertaining.

I have continued on my Harry Potter Re-read challenge and am up to The Order of the Phoenix. I mostly listen to the audio version while I work. I never get tired of Harry Potter.

In my car, I am listening to Insurgent because I like Emma Galvan's voice. I can only listen to so much before I get fed up with Tris. (Yes, I do like the series but after a second read of it, Tris has become a bit full of herself always insisting on taking on all the bad guys alone}. I think now that I know the full outcome of the series, I am a bit more harsh with Tris. I was the same way with Bella Swan's lack of confidence. The girl could cook, she was smart, she was kind and a good friend. Why was she so down on herself?

I also spent a day at the library reading through a stack of picture books but my favorite picture book of the week was one sent to me by author Debbie Diesen. See pictures from inside the book here

I am setting it aside to use as a start of school book.

Next up for me is The Night Gardener, Almost Abigail, and more Harry Potter.

What does your reading week look like? Let me know.

  1. I never got beyond Maze Runner, which I thought had the same flaws that you point out, Julee. But my students loved the series and are waiting for the movie with much excitement. And, I grew impatient with Tris, too. She is no Katniss Everdeen, that's for sure - and I didn't bother to finish Insurgent. Interestingly, my students feel the same way, and many were disappointed by books 2 and 3.

    1. Thanks Tara. It's funny how reading a book a second time can really change your first impression. I liked Divergent and Insurgent on first read but listening to the audio of Insurgent...I had to shut it off every now and then because I got so frustrated with Tris's inability to see that she didn't have to be the one person making all the decisions and taking the action to shake things up.

On Twitter last night I was encouraged to give Maze Runner's second book a try but others had felt the same way I did about the story and characters.

  2. I am almost done with Ratchet, can't wait to hear about Abigail! I am hoping to get to The Night Gardener this month! I haven't read The Maze Runner series yet. Sometime!

    1. Ratchet? I am not familiar with that one. I have read Hatchet by Gary Paulson. Abigail looks pretty cute-sort of a journal/diary form.

  3. Hi Julee! Maze Runner sounds fabulous. I could listen to HP audios all day long. Pout-pout fish is a fave! Enjoy your week!

  4. Maze Runner with new covers - wow. I guess because of the movie. I read Maze Runner and the next two. Liked Maze Runner the most. Some very creepy scenes! I know what you mean about Insurgent. I read the trilogy but by the time I got to the third book, I wasn't all that impressed. I think there are so many other dystopian/adventures that are so much better - like the Legend trilogy and The Lunar Chronicles. Happy Reading this week!

    1. My students kept Cress checked out so I missed out on reading it upon release but now that summer is here, I can find a bit of spare time to read it after The One.

  5. Maze runner wasn't a good enough book to make me want to read any of the sequels, and I'm almost embarrassed to admit that I am not a Harry Potter fan. I enjoyed Divergent and have Allegient when I get around to listening it. The Night Gardener is on my to read list. I look forward to reading your reflections on it.

    1. I have set Night Gardener aside until August so I will have it fresh in my mind before our book club chat. I am reading The Selection Stories today and soon after The One.

  6. I envy you your Harry Potter re-read. My 12 year old girl is currently reading the series but stopped as she is now reading Mockingjay. Hopefully I get to the re-read soon especially since there's a new HP story coming out, apparently. Haven't read the Divergent series yet, from what I hear I'm afraid it may not be worth my while. I'm excited about The Night Gardener, and looking forward to finding it in our libraries.
